Trump extends Biden's Russia sanctions order for one year

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending for one year sanctions against Russia imposed in April 2021 by President Joe Biden in response to the Russian government's malign activities abroad and subsequently expanded in March 2022 following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The document, dated April 10, was published in the US Federal Register, as reported by Ukrinform.

On April 15, 2021, the President of the United States signed Executive Order 14024, declaring a national emergency, which allows sanctions to be imposed on individuals and entities that pose a threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States as a result of the Russian government's malign activities outside the country.

On March 8, 2022, the then President signed a new Executive Order 14066, which expanded the scope of the emergency declared in Executive Order 14024.

“I am extending the emergency declared in Executive Order 14024 for one year,” reads the document signed by Trump.

On March 31, Trump said he would not rule out the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions against Russia if Putin “doesn’t do his job,” but added that he had no doubt that the Kremlin leader would fulfill his obligations.

Under U.S. law, emergencies are declared by executive order and remain in effect for one year unless extended. The status provides the government with additional resources and legal authority to respond to threats and impose sanctions on foreign individuals and entities.
