US President Donald Trump on May 21 declared Cuba a failed country with no electricity, no money, and no food, and promised to help the island. He said he would solve the Cuban issue that his predecessors had been working on for decades.
The American president said this during a press conference at the White House, a correspondent for Suspilny reported.
Trump was asked if he was trying to intimidate Cuba by deploying an aircraft carrier in the Caribbean.
“No, not at all. Cuba, listen, it's a failed country. Everybody knows they don't have electricity, they don't have money, they don't really have anything, they don't have food, and we're going to help them,” Trump said.
He added that he wants to help Cuba on a humanitarian basis, as well as take into account the interests of the Cuban-American community, a large part of which lives in Miami and the state of Florida. According to Trump, these people want to return to Cuba and invest in their country.
“Other presidents have been watching this for 50, 60 years, doing something. And it looks like I'm the one who's going to do it. I'd be happy to do it. We want to open it up to Cuban Americans so they can come back and help,” the US president said.
Trump also called Cuban Americans “a wonderful, amazing, hard-working group of people” and “great Americans.” He added that he would like them to stay in the United States, but he understands their desire to return to Cuba and try to “take back” the country.
