Oleksandr Abakumov, head of the detective group of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), expressed hope that law enforcement officers will complete the investigation into the case of large-scale embezzlement in the Ukrainian energy company Midas by the end of the summer. However, according to him, the legislation allows it to be conducted until November 2026.
He stated this during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada's Anti-Corruption Committee on February 26, a correspondent for Suspilny reports.
“From November (we are talking about 2025 – ed.), the legislation gives us a maximum period of one year to conduct this investigation. That is, by November of this year we are obliged to complete this investigation. We are trying to do it as quickly as possible. I am sure that we will not drag it out until November, but, probably, we will definitely need time by the end of the summer,” the anti-corruption activist said.
At the same time, Abakumov noted that he could not give a more precise deadline for completing the investigation in this case, because, he said, “it's like hiking in the dark, when you want to find evidence, you find it alone, and another one follows behind.”
NABU Head Semen Kryvonos told a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada's anti-corruption committee that employees of a number of law enforcement agencies were interested in the court rulings in the “Midas” case. According to him, this “needs to be changed at the legislative level, because, they say, “this is an abnormal story.”
