German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would visit Washington, where he would meet with US President Donald Trump, to present the European Union's common position on the tariffs he had imposed.
Merz's statement was quoted by Politico.
“I will go to Washington with a coordinated European position,” said the German Chancellor, emphasizing that tariff policy is the competence of the entire EU, not individual member states.
Merz is expected to meet with the White House in early March. EU member states are currently assessing the implications for transatlantic trade of the US Supreme Court's February 20 ruling that struck down global import tariffs that Trump had imposed in the spring of 2025.
After that, the American leader announced new tariffs on imports of goods and raw materials to the United States in the amount of 10%, and then decided to increase them to 15%.
