London summit to discuss strengthening Ukraine and military support

The international leaders' summit in London on March 2 will focus on strengthening Ukraine's position, including continuing military support, increasing economic pressure on Russia, achieving a just peace and developing reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrinform, this information was published on the UK government website.

“The Prime Minister is stepping up his efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine by bringing together international leaders for a summit in London today,” the statement said.

The summit caps a week of intense diplomacy for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which he announced a boost to the UK's defence budget and visited Washington for “productive talks with President Trump in the interests of UK and European security”. Starmer “spoke again with President Trump and President Zelenskyy on Friday evening to discuss the developments of the presidents' meeting in Washington, DC”.

On Sunday morning, the British prime minister will meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in his office. The leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania will then join the summit in central London. The Turkish foreign minister, the NATO secretary general and the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council will also be present.

“The Prime Minister has made clear that there can be no discussion on Ukraine without Ukraine itself, and he reiterated that commitment when he warmly welcomed President Zelenskyy to Downing Street on Saturday evening ahead of the summit,” the UK government said.

Key topics for discussion at the summit will include: strengthening Ukraine's position, in particular through continued military support and increased economic pressure on Russia; the need to reach a strong and lasting agreement that will ensure stable peace in Ukraine and its ability to defend itself against future attacks from Russia; and further steps to develop reliable security guarantees.

“Three years on from Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, we are at a critical juncture. Today, I will reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and redouble my commitment to providing opportunities, training and assistance to Ukraine, putting it in the strongest possible position,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

According to him, now is a unique time to “unite to ensure a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine that guarantees its sovereignty and security.”

“Now is the time to unite to ensure the best outcome for Ukraine, protect European security and secure our common future,” the British Prime Minister stressed.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Ukraine and the UK signed an agreement to provide an emergency loan of 2.26 billion pounds sterling (about 3 billion US dollars) to finance the purchase of defense materials.
