Foreign Ministers of Japan, China and South Korea Discuss Russia's War in Ukraine

The foreign ministers of Japan, China and South Korea – Takeshi Iwaya, Wang Yi and Cho Dae-yul – held a trilateral meeting in Tokyo to discuss Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

The ministers shared their views on the situation in Ukraine, Ukrinform reports with reference to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

“Minister Iwaya stressed the need to remain united in advocating that unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force should not be tolerated anywhere in the world,” the press release said.

The Japanese diplomat also expressed concern over deepening military ties between Russia and North Korea, Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs, and North Korea's involvement in cybercrimes involving the theft of cryptocurrency.

“Minister Iwaya also noted that the denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions is a common goal of the three countries,” the Japanese Foreign Ministry added.

On regional relations, amid growing uncertainty in global trade and security over Donald Trump's possible return to the White House, the three ministers agreed to strengthen trilateral cooperation “oriented towards the future.”

Despite existing differences and conflicts, Japan, China and South Korea have stepped up efforts to reduce tensions in bilateral and trilateral relations, especially in response to Trump's return to power and his renewed tariff wars with US trading partners.

The Japanese government is considering deploying anti-ship missiles capable of hitting targets up to 1,000 kilometers away on Kyushu, Japan's southernmost and third-largest island. The missiles would be able to target targets near North Korea and coastal areas of China.
