Finland and Norway to join in developing peace plan for Ukraine – Stubb

Finland, in cooperation with Norway, will assist in the creation of a peace plan for Ukraine, which is currently being worked on by Ukraine, Great Britain and France.

This was stated by the President of Finland Alexander Stubb, commenting on the meeting of the leaders of partner countries dedicated to supporting Ukraine in London, Ukrinform reports with reference to Yle.

“At this stage, Ukraine, Great Britain and France will take responsibility for the development of the peace plan,” Stubb said, adding that Finland, together with Norway, will participate in supporting the development of this plan.

The Finnish leader also noted that the details will be discussed with Ukraine in the coming days.

According to him, the summit participants agreed on three main issues:

ending the war; continued military, political and economic support for Ukraine; the need for a plan to achieve peace.

Stubb also stressed that no commitments were made at the summit regarding the deployment of European forces on the territory of Ukraine.

“The UK and France intend to ensure a certain military presence in Ukraine. However, those countries that border Russia and are responsible for NATO's protection on that border understand that their contribution will be different,” the Finnish president noted.

He also said that the participants of the London summit had agreed to make progress on the issue of using Russia's frozen assets. In addition, the situation in non-EU countries was discussed at the meeting.

“We have stressed from various sides that the negotiations and preparations must involve not only the EU, but also the UK, Norway and Turkey, which were also represented at this meeting,” Stubb said.

It was previously reported that on March 2, a meeting of the leaders of partner states in support of Ukraine was held in London, with representatives from Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania participating. The Turkish Foreign Minister, NATO Secretary General, and the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council were also present. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also attended the meeting.

Following the summit, the leaders of the countries emphasized that the basis for a potential ceasefire should be reliable security guarantees.
