The Estonian government has extended the closure of border crossings with Russia at night for another three months.
This was reported by the Estonian broadcaster ERR.
Initially, the decision to close the border with the Russian Federation at night was made by the country's authorities back in early 2026. This was a response to repeated violations of the Estonian border by the Russian military. For example, in December 2025, three border guards crossed the Estonian border in the Vasknarva area on the Narva River and stayed on the territory of the state for about 20 minutes, then turned back.
Since then, the Koidula and Luhamaa border crossings in southeastern Estonia have been closed at night and only open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The country's authorities have now decided to extend this rule until August 31.
In addition, from June 15, the operating hours of the pedestrian crossing point “Narva-1” in the border city of Narva will be reduced from 7:00 to 23:00 and from 7:00 to 19:00.
Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro said that since the Russian side has “not demonstrated goodwill” over the past three months, the government does not consider it possible to ease the border regime with the Russian Federation.
