Estonia wants to ban citizens of Russia and Belarus from buying real estate

Estonia wants to restrict the purchase of real estate by Belarusians and Russians without permanent residence status in the country. This also applies to companies working on their behalf, due to security risks.

This is discussed in the ERR material.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Estonia reduced visa issuance to Russian and Belarusian citizens. However, a number of EU countries continue to issue visas, allowing Russians and Belarusians to travel freely within the EU. Estonia is also calling for a ban on all veterans with combat experience.

Interior Minister Igor Taro said that the purchase of real estate by citizens of Russia and Belarus with an “unknown past” poses a security risk amid the aggression of the Kremlin and its allies.
