Charles Michel supports suspension of Russia’s membership in UNSC

President of the Eurean Council, Charles Michel, advocates the develment of a mechanism that would lead to having Russia's membership in the UN Security Council suspended over its aggression against Ukraine.

The official said this in an interview with RTVI, Ukrinform reports.

"I think there is a gap in international law if a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in this case Russia, defiantly viates international law. In my inion, a mechanism for suspending membership should be established: I am not talking about Russia’s complete expulsion, but at least the suspension of Russia's membership in the Security Council," said Michel.

He added that in the future, the reform of the UN system will be mandatory.

"So, I am among those who believe that sooner or later, the reform of the UN functioning will be mandatory, for example, to better take into account the balance of the modern world order. We see that the African continent is very little or very badly represented in the UN structures; the same can be said about Latin America. And I think that at some point, there will be a discussion of a deep reform of the UN system," said Michel.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, U.S. Congressmen Steve Cohen and Joe Wilson submitted to Congress a resution calling on Joe Biden's administration to initiate the process of expelling Russia from the UN Security Council.
