A partial shutdown has begun in the United States

The US federal government has partially shut down, despite the Senate approving a funding deal needed to avert a shutdown.

This is reported by the American TV channels CNBC and CNN.

The partial shutdown officially began at midnight on January 31, EST, hours after senators voted 71-29 to pass a package of five bills and agree to continue funding most federal agencies until September.

The US government shutdown is expected to be short-lived. The package of bills must be approved by the House of Representatives, which is in recess until Monday, February 2. Lawmakers in the lower house are expected to vote on it shortly after returning to Washington.

On January 29, White House President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, urged lawmakers to support an agreement that would fund most of the Federal Government until the end of the fiscal year, September 30.

In the fall of 2025, the United States experienced a record-breaking shutdown that disrupted federal services for 43 days. Until January 30, 2026, the US Federal Government operated under a temporary spending law passed in November of last year.
