“Dune,” the new film adaptation of a sci-fi classic, will be screened in English in several cinemas across Kyiv over the Sept. 24-26 weekend.

Editor’s Note: Ukraine extended its COVID-19 quarantine until Dec. 31 and tightened restrictions across the country on Sept. 23. Most cultural venues must operate at lower capacity, except those that allow only visitors who are at least partly vaccinated or who had tested negative for the disease in the past 72 hours. This year’s cosmic blockbuster will land in several Kyiv cinemas over this weekend and beyond. Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the seminal work of science fiction by Frank Herbert is third on the record after a controversial 1984 film by David Lynch and a highly successful mini-series by John Harrison in 2000. In the mid-1970s, there was another attempt by cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky, but the 14-hour version became too big to meet the budget (at least there is an award-winning documentary about the endeavor). Thankfully, Villeneuve had a creative license to introduce his vision, with a star-studded cast of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and many others, including composer Hans Zimmer. The film covers roughly the first part of the original novel, while Villeneuve plans to cover the second part in the sequel and perhaps making the third film based on the second Dune novel.
