In 2023, two days before her 76th birthday, legendary Ukrainian singer Nina Matvienko died. The artist was battling cancer.
Her daughter, singer Tonya Matvienko, shared her memories of the last months of her mother's life in an interview that was published on Alina Dorotyuk's YouTube channel.
According to Tony, the family learned about the difficult diagnosis – stage four cancer – in the summer of 2023. Nina Matvienko's health deteriorated sharply in August, when she was hospitalized.
She felt a lot of pain, she started screaming and showed it physically… The doctors said it was too late, everything was over, stage four and where were we,
– the singer shared and urged everyone to go to the doctors for a check-up and not to self-medicate.
Earlier, in an interview with Slava Demin, Toni Matvienko's husband recalled that Nina Mitrofanivna always said that she felt healthy and that nothing hurt her. When she was advised to see doctors and get tested, she replied: “I feel fine.”
Also, according to her daughter, Nina Matvienko believed in recovery until the last moment and did not want outsiders to know about her illness. The artist noted that she tried to support her mother as much as possible and make her last months calmer and brighter. She was often there, tried to support and cheer her up, to distract her, brought a tablet – to watch TV series and communicate with loved ones.
In the fall, she could be taken to the park in a wheelchair. But there weren't many guests either, because she was ashamed of her bad appearance. Because she believed that she would recover and no one would know. At first, they didn't talk about the diagnosis, but she guessed,
