Invaders destroy 19th-century building in Mariup

A 19th-century building – the Palace of Culture "Modizhny" – was destroyed in Mariup, temporarily occupied by the Russian military.

During massive enemy shelling last year, hundreds of citizens were hiding there. Now, this historical building is destroyed.

"Palace of Culture ‘Modizhny’ is one of the sightseeing attractions of Mariup, it was built in the 19th century by the Italian Tomaso family. Before World War I, the Continental Hotel functioned there with a restaurant, a performance hall, a printing house, and a sh. Then it housed the Palace of Labor and the Palace of Culture ‘Azovstal’," the Mariup City Council posted on Telegram.

In 2010, this historic building turned into the Palace of Culture "Modizhny", and in 2019, a decision was made to create the "Continental Hotel" Contemporary Art Center. Theater studios, children's clubs, and the Gogfest festival events were held in the building.

As reported, Mariup experienced one of the biggest humanitarian disasters caused by Russia's aggression. The city was almost 90% destroyed as a result of enemy shelling.

The invaders are turning Mariup and the surrounding villages into a military-logistics hub for the Russian army.
