In Ukraine, 1,222 cultural heritage sites affected by Russian war

In Ukraine, 1,222 cultural heritage sites suffered damaged as a result of Russia’s full-scale aggression, including 43 in November.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications, Ukrinform saw.

"According to a report from the regional and Kyiv military administrations, in November the total number of damaged cultural heritage sites across regions increased by 43, reaching 1,222. Of these, 124 are of national importance, 1,024 – of local importance, and 74 – newly discovered," the report states.

It is noted that repeated strikes on previously damaged cultural heritage sites took place in Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and Kherson regions. New strikes were reported in Dnipretrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions.

In total, cultural sites in 18 regions and Kyiv were damaged, including 322 in Kharkiv region, 159 in Kherson region, 164 in Donetsk region, 136 in Odesa region, 65 in Chernihiv region, 81 in Kyiv and its region, 56 in Zaporizhzhia region, 41 in Mykaiv region, 49 in Dnipretrovsk region, 60 in Lviv region, 32 in Luhansk region, 31 in Sumy region, 10 in Khmelnytskyi region, six in Ptava region, four each in Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions, , and one each in Kirovohrad and Cherkasy regions.

The ministry added that as of late November 2024, almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions have remained under temporary occupation. This makes it impossible to calculate the exact number of damaged cultural heritage monuments that suffered amid hostilities and occupation.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Myka Tochytskyi stated that about two million elements of Ukrainian cultural heritage are under occupation.
