EU, Sweden and Germany to allocate €44 million to support civil society in Ukraine
This information is contained in a press release from the EU Delegation to Ukraine, as reported by Ukrinform.
According to the statement, the EU will launch a €14 million fundraising campaign for civil society organisations, which will end in May 2025. The amount includes €5 million to address issues of gender leadership and conflict.
Sweden and Germany are also providing additional assistance of €17 million, while the EU is building on a €13 million support package that includes direct grants for civil society projects covering topics such as gender equality, accountability for war crimes, access to information, strengthening democratic processes, as well as social cohesion and sustainable development.
The statement stresses that this latest package of measures strengthens the EU's long-term strategy to support Ukrainian civil society, increasing its resilience to Russian aggression and ensuring that humanitarian aid and integration efforts reach those who need them most.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the EU has provided over €150 million to civil society organisations, supporting their vital work in humanitarian response, justice, democratic development and governance. Since the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the EU has rapidly increased its support to civil society organisations, redirecting projects to address immediate needs, including emergency food and shelter, evacuation assistance, medical assistance, documentation of war crimes, integration of veterans and internally displaced persons, and efforts to combat disinformation. In 2022 alone, EU funding has tripled from €20 million to €60 million, enabling Ukrainian civil society to effectively respond to urgent needs.
