Canada granted asylum to almost 300,000 Ukrainians

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 298,000 Ukrainian asylum seekers have arrived in Canada.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, this is evidenced by data from the Canada Border Services Agency.

It is noted that 298,128 Ukrainians have so far arrived in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Emergency Travel Permit (CUAET) programme, which was established in March last year. This programme gives Ukrainians fleeing the war the right to an emergency three-year work and residence permit, financial assistance and temporary free accommodation. In total, the Canadian government has received almost 1.2 million applications for this visa, of which more than 960,000 have been approved.

As it is known, although the acceptance of new applications for CUAET was stped last summer, Canada has created a new migration programme that allows certain categories of Ukrainian asylum seekers to stay in the country on a permanent basis.
