Ukraine to expand free school meals program: who else won't pay for lunch?

The Government of the Country continues the school nutrition reform, the idea of which was initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska. Under this program, starting from September 2025, all students in grades 5-11 in front-line and border regions will receive free meals.

What changes await students?

  • From September 2025, all students in grades 5-11 in front-line and border regions will receive free meals;
  • From September 2026, the program will be expanded to grades 5-6 in all regions;
  • Full rollout to all classes is planned by 2027.

What else do they plan to change?

To implement the reform, the state planned:

  • Renovate school cafeterias and food units;
  • Introduce a culture of healthy eating in schools;
  • Improve the qualifications of cooks.

Let us remind you that from 2027, high school in Ukraine will switch to a new format of education, which provides for specialized education.
