Radioactive harvest: crops were grown on 190 hectares of land in the Chernobyl zone for over 5 years

The Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Prosecutor General's Office has filed a lawsuit with the Economic Court of Kyiv Region to return to the state three land plots with a total area of over 190 hectares. The lands are located in the Chernobyl zone and have been illegally cultivated for over 5 years.

This was reported on April 13 on the website of the Prosecutor General's Office.

“These lands are located in the Vyshgorod district – in the exclusion zone and the mandatory resettlement zone, which were affected by the Chernobyl disaster,” the report states.

According to the UCP, the plots were used by the state body responsible for managing the exclusion zone. However, state registrars illegally changed their status and transferred them to communal ownership. After that, the right to use the land was unjustifiably registered with a private company.

Since 2020, all of these territories have been used to grow agricultural crops, including wheat and corn, without special permission. This poses a risk to people's lives and health, the prosecutor's office notes.

The investigation established that the basis for the registration actions was a decision of the Polissya District Council, which does not actually exist. They also used state deeds for land issued to the former collective enterprise “Svitanok”, which is in the process of being liquidated and has no successors.

The court has already opened proceedings in the case and scheduled a preparatory meeting. The investigation is ongoing, the Prosecutor General's Office added.
