Hungary declared an “attack on its sovereignty” due to the attack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Druzhba oil pipeline

Hungary has accused Ukraine of cutting off Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called such actions “incomprehensible and unacceptable.”

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó accused the Ukrainian president of trying to undermine Hungary's national sovereignty , saying Hungary and Slovakia rely on the Druzhba pipeline to receive about two million tons of oil annually.

“Zelensky's threat to blow up the Druzhba oil pipeline not only jeopardizes the supply of oil to Hungary, but also threatens national sovereignty, so any attempt to destroy it is an encroachment on Hungary's independence and security,” Szijjártó said.

Szijjártó stressed that Ukraine's decision jeopardizes the long-term security of oil supplies for both countries. He called on Kyiv to resolve the issue and plans to raise the issue at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

Earlier, in June 2024, Ukraine tightened sanctions against the Russian company Lukoil, effectively banning it from using Ukrainian territory for oil transit. This led to the cessation of oil transportation to Hungary via the Druzhba oil pipeline. Szijjártó noted that the Hungarian energy company Mol Nyrt. and Lukoil are working to resolve this issue.

It is worth noting that the Druzhba oil pipeline has been stopped before. In November 2022, oil supplies to Hungary were temporarily suspended due to damage to a transformer substation as a result of a missile strike on Ukraine. After technical work, supplies were restored, but the volumes of supplies remained lower than usual.

Currently, the situation with oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline remains tense. Hungary is looking for alternative ways to ensure energy supplies, but emphasizes the importance of the stable operation of the pipeline for the country's energy security.
