
Environmentalist and activist Volodymyr Boreyko died in a car accident near Kyiv.
His wife, journalist Olga Musafirova, reported this on Facebook on March 13.
“Our family will inform you about the time and place of burial later. Please be understanding and do not call me now,” Olga added.
The police told Suspilne that the accident occurred in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region. The head of the communications department of the Kyiv region police, Yana Yermolenko, clarified that Boreyko died yesterday, March 12, in an accident on the Kyiv-Znamyanka highway, near the village of Yakhny. He was in the passenger seat of a Renault Kengoo, whose 60-year-old driver drove into the oncoming lane, where he collided with a Scania truck driven by a 46-year-old man.
Boreyko and the driver of the Renault Kengoo died from their injuries.
Kyiv region police opened a case under Part 3 of Article 286 Violation of road safety rules or transport operation by persons driving vehicles, if this caused the death of several persons of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Volodymyr Boreyko is an Honored Nature Conservationist of Ukraine, an ecologist and animal rights activist, director of the public organization “Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center”. He was also involved in the protection of botanical monuments and advocated the creation of new nature conservation zones, was knowledgeable about the Red Book plants of Ukraine. He was against hunting animals for entertainment – his center promoted the initiative to introduce a moratorium on hunting in Ukraine. Boreyko also conducted video blogs about animals on the YouTube channel ZooEtika.
