In Dnipro, two trauma specialists have come under scrutiny after they inadvertently performed surgery on a child's uninjured arm rather than the fractured one. A medico-legal assessment concluded that the surgical intervention lacked any clinical justification.

A child's healthy hand was operated on instead of the injured one: two doctors in Dnipro received suspicions

In Dnipro, medical professionals were meant to correct a child's broken bone, but erroneously operated on the opposite limb. According to statements from the Prosecutor General's Office, two physicians have been formally notified of suspicion, UNN indicates.

In September of 2022, the child's parent brought him to the medical facility. An X-ray revealed a break in his right extremity, leading to the boy being placed in a plaster cast with a scheduled follow-up appointment a month later.

Upon re-examination, the doctors declared that the fracture had supposedly mended improperly and advocated for surgical intervention.

On November 1, 2022, the same physicians conducted the surgery, but due to an oversight, they operated on the unaffected arm, essentially fracturing it.

Upon the child’s arrival in the post-operative area, the parent promptly noticed that the incorrect limb had been subjected to the procedure. The family acted swiftly to move the boy to a different hospital, where he obtained appropriate medical attention and restorative therapy.

The forensic medical assessment determined that there was absolutely no medical necessity for the surgical procedure. Due to a severe lapse in adhering to medical protocols, the child suffered injuries of moderate severity.

– stated the Prosecutor General's Office.

Under the guidance of the Western District Prosecutor's Office of Dnipro, two trauma specialists have been informed of suspicion as per Part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
