The ministry emphasized that children under the age of 5, who lack vaccination and, consequently, immunity against the virus, are most at risk. It further explained that the virus spreads through personal contact via excrement and spittle, with transmission often occurring through unhygienic hands, tainted edibles and potable water.
As part of the modernized National Immunization Program, a shift has occurred toward utilizing inactivated (“non-active”) polio vaccine. Oral polio vaccine (OPV), administered as droplets, will no longer be employed. The vaccination protocol is also undergoing changes. It presently comprises 5 vaccinations using inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), given at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months, along with at 6 years old. The booster dose at 14 years has been discontinued.
