On the night of May 3, the port infrastructure of Chornomorsk in the Odessa region came under massive drone attack. Among the facilities hit was the terminal of the Kernel company, which handles vegetable oil.

What is known about the attack on Kernel?

Direct hits destroyed and damaged storage tanks, resulting in the leakage of over 1,100 tons of oil, the company reported, NV reports.

At the same time, the situation was quickly brought under control – the leak was promptly localized, and the products did not fall into the sea, so an environmental disaster was avoided.

The impact also caused a large-scale fire that engulfed part of the production facilities:

  • The fire was extinguished in a short time, but the damage to the infrastructure was significant.
  • In addition to the tanks, the company's production equipment, office space, and logistics infrastructure were damaged.
  • In particular, four railway tank cars used to transport products were damaged.

Due to the significant damage, the company was forced to temporarily suspend the reception and shipment of products at this terminal. One of the company's employees was also injured in the attack – he received moderate injuries.

Currently, work is underway at the facility to eliminate the consequences of the shelling, as well as assess the damage and technical condition of the infrastructure.

What will be the consequences for the economy?

Attacks on port infrastructure have a broader economic impact than first appears. It involves not only physical damage, but also disruption of logistics chains. Such attacks include:

  • increase the cost of exports
  • create delays in contract execution
  • forcing businesses to quickly restructure routes
  • increase the load on alternative ports

What does this mean? For the agricultural sector, which is heavily dependent on exports, this means additional risks and costs.

Note! The attack on the terminal in Chornomorsk demonstrates the vulnerability of the export infrastructure of even large companies. Businesses adapt and find alternatives, but each such attack complicates logistics, increases costs and creates additional pressure on the economy.

What are the consequences of the attack on the Odessa region on the night of May 3?

– the official wrote.

According to the head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration, the fires that broke out have now been extinguished by rescuers.

All relevant services are working to eliminate the consequences. Law enforcement agencies are documenting another war crime by the Russian army against the civilian population of the Odessa region,
– Kiper assured.

Why is Russia shelling Odessa and the region?

Odessa and the region are being attacked by combined groups of drones. According to experts, they could have included jet drones, which indicates a possible testing of new strike tactics, UNIAN writes.

Military-political observer Oleksandr Kovalenko notes that it is currently difficult to accurately determine the type of devices used, but the nature of the attack may indicate the experimental use of new means.

I cannot yet name the exact modification of the jet drones, but most likely the tactics and effectiveness of using these means were tested in Odessa, taking into account the growing rates of interception of enemy targets by interceptor drones.

According to him, back on January 11, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported on the first use of the “Geran-5” modification. In fact, this is a small-sized subsonic cruise missile.

In addition, the Russian army began using Shahed-238 jet drones earlier – the first reports of their downing appeared in early 2024. In 2025, they were used during attacks on Ukraine, but these devices have not yet been widely used.

As Ukraine actively develops drone interception systems, the Russian side is looking for ways to bypass this defense. As the expert notes, the main areas remain increasing the speed or maneuverability of drones.

It is currently unknown exactly which devices were used in this attack — Shahed-238 or Geran-5/Karrar. However, the nature of the strike suggests that Russia may be testing new tools to break through Ukraine's anti-drone system.

Kovalenko emphasizes: as throughout the full-scale invasion, Odessa remains for Russian troops not only an object of attack, but also a testing ground for new types of weapons , tactics, and modifications of means of destruction.
