US President Donald Trump announced the signing of a “historic executive order establishing reciprocal tariffs for countries around the world,” with the base tariff set at 10%.
“Reciprocity means they do it to us, and we do it to them. It's as simple as that. It couldn't be simpler,” Trump said during a speech at the White House on Wednesday.
He clarified that the tariffs will not be “fully reciprocal,” given the non-monetary barriers.
The White House published all the tables, some of which the US President cited in his speech, which list countries and two columns opposite them: the size of the duty on imports of American goods and the size of the US duty on imports of goods from these countries. For Ukraine, these figures are equal – 10%.
“We'll charge them about half of what they charge us. The tariffs won't be completely reciprocal,” Trump said of his reciprocal tariff plan.
However, the size of the tariff on U.S. goods includes “the combined rate of all their tariffs, non-monetary barriers and other forms of manipulation,” he added.
Trump presented a table with examples of retaliatory tariffs that would be imposed on countries around the world, including the European Union and China.
Trump also confirmed that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars starting Thursday, April 3.
Trump is promising what he calls an “American Golden Age” that he believes will create more jobs and boost domestic production, ushering in a new era of domestic prosperity.
