Switzerland joins 16th package of EU anti-Russian sanctions

Switzerland has decided to join a number of provisions of the European Union's 16th package of anti-Russian sanctions, the Swiss government said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Switzerland is implementing additional measures adopted by the EU […]. These measures will come into force on 4 March,” the statement said.

The restrictions will affect 48 individuals and 35 organizations, “including supporters of the Russian military complex,” the report notes.

The sanctions also apply to 74 vessels from third countries, mainly tankers.

According to the statement, “stricter export control measures will be applied to 53 new entities.”

Three banks will be subject to restrictions for using the Russian Central Bank's financial messaging system. Switzerland will cut off SWIFT from 13 Russian banks starting March 17.

On February 24, the EU Foreign Affairs Council approved the 16th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia.
