Lured by conditions abroad, Ukrainian workers won’t stay home after quarantine ease

When Ukraine closed its borders amid the COVID-19 pandemic on March 17, hundreds of Ukrainian migrant workers were stranded at home. Left without seasonal workers, some countries, including Poland and Finland, organized special flights to bring Ukrainians back to the fields.

Many Ukrainians rush abroad in the summers. But not all of them take vacations there — many move to a foreign country to work.

They pick fruit, vegetables, and berries for European farmers — who praise the Ukrainian workforce as skilled, diligent and hardworking. And it is the best way to make a living for millions of Ukrainians.
