The Energy Community reported that Canada has contributed C$70 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
“Thank you Canada for your generous contribution of CAD 70 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund! Your support will help restore Ukraine's energy system by providing essential equipment – transformers, generators, gas infrastructure components and repair materials – to keep homes warm and lit,” the Energy Community said in a Facebook post on Friday.
Earlier, the Energy Community Secretariat, which manages the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, announced on March 12 that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had terminated a $75 million grant agreement with the fund. The Energy Community specified that a $25 million contract was signed in 2023 to purchase critical energy equipment, and USAID committed to providing an additional $50 million in 2024.
The Energy Support Fund was established in April 2022 on the initiative of Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
As of early March 2025, pledged partner contributions to the fund exceeded €1 billion. Donors include both the public and private sectors from more than 30 countries, as well as international and regional organisations.
On March 4, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that some projects previously funded by USAID programs have already found alternative sources of funding.
Former member of the National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulation of Ukraine (NKREKU) and energy expert Olha Babiy noted in a commentary for Energy Reform that the possible termination of USAID funding for the restoration of Ukraine's energy sector is a problem, especially for critical infrastructure facilities. However, she believes that this issue can be resolved by finding alternative sources of funding.
As of March 14, the exchange rate for 1 Canadian dollar is approximately 29 hryvnia.
