The Energy Community reported that Canada has contributed C$70 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
“Thank you to Canada for your generous contribution of CAD 70 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund! Your assistance will help restore Ukraine's energy system by providing the necessary equipment – transformers, generators, gas infrastructure, and repair materials – to keep homes warm and light,” the Energy Community said in a statement on Facebook on Friday.
Earlier, it was reported that the Energy Community Secretariat, which manages the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, announced on March 12 that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had terminated a $75 million grant agreement with the fund. The Energy Community explained that a $25 million contract was signed in 2023 to purchase critical energy equipment, and USAID agreed to provide an additional $50 million in 2024.
The Energy Support Fund was established in April 2022 on the initiative of Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
As of early March 2025, pledged partner contributions to the fund exceeded €1 billion. Donors include public and private organisations from more than 30 countries, as well as international and regional institutions.
On March 4, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that some projects that were previously funded through USAID programs have already received alternative sources of funding.
Former member of the National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulation of Ukraine (NCERU) and energy expert Olha Babiy noted in a commentary to Energy Reform that the possible termination of USAID support for the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure is a problem, especially for critical facilities. However, she believes that this problem can be solved by finding alternative sources of funding.
As of March 14, the exchange rate for 1 Canadian dollar is approximately 29 UAH.
