Ukraine is ready to temporarily abandon EU agricultural subsidies to speed up integration. The government is considering compromises to ease tensions among European partners.
Ukraine is ready to postpone agricultural subsidies for the sake of accession
Ukraine may temporarily not receive payments under the Common Agricultural Policy in order to simplify negotiations on joining the European Union, Bloomberg reports. Taras Kachka stated this, emphasizing that Kyiv is open to discussing specific mechanisms for such a solution.
This program is one of the largest items in the EU budget and has traditionally been controversial during enlargement negotiations. If Ukraine joins, it could qualify for significant agricultural subsidies, which has heightened concerns among some member states.
The situation is also complicated by previous trade conflicts, in particular with Poland, which arose due to the liberalization of access of Ukrainian agricultural products to the European market.
Important! At the same time, Kyiv emphasizes: the main priority is full membership in the EU as soon as possible, even if this means temporarily giving up some financial benefits.
Financial support and political obstacles
In parallel, Ukraine is seeking to unblock financial assistance from the European Union. This concerns the first tranche of a €90 billion loan program, which is currently delayed due to Hungary's position.
The reason was the suspension of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline. The Hungarian side insists on the resumption of transit as a condition for unblocking the funds.
Ukraine says supplies will be restored soon, allowing the process to move forward. Some of these funds are needed to finance critical spending, including defense.
Pay attention! Kyiv emphasizes: obtaining funding is extremely important, and the state is counting on the support of partners to accelerate payments.
