The full-scale war has caused significant losses to Ukraine's grain elevator infrastructure. Despite the reduction in grain storage capacity, there is currently no shortage due to the smaller harvest.

How critical are the losses of elevators now?

Pavlo Martyshev, an analyst at the Center for Food and Land Use Research (KSE) of the Kyiv School of Economics Agrocenter, said that Ukraine's grain elevator industry suffered losses of approximately $1.1 billion during the years of the full-scale war, Delo.ua reports. Losses of grain storage capacity amount to up to 13 million tons.

According to him, currently the total grain elevator capacity in Ukraine is about 53 million tons, which is about 4 million tons less than in 2021. In total, over the four years of war, the country lost from 9 to 13 million tons of storage capacity, although some of the facilities were later restored.

At the same time, there is currently no significant capacity shortage. This is explained by the reduction in grain and oilseed production – from 106 million tons in 2021 to about 76 million tons in 2025.

According to experts, the future state of the storage infrastructure will depend on the security situation and the pace of recovery of the agricultural sector.
