The world could face record famine due to war

Global hunger levels could reach a historic high amid worsening geopolitical tensions, Reuters reports, citing experts from the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

The organization estimates that if hostilities against Iran continue until June, tens of millions of people could be on the brink of acute famine. In particular, the attacks have disrupted key humanitarian aid supply routes, which has already led to delays in the delivery of goods to the most vulnerable regions.

Note: As WFP Deputy Executive Director Karl Skau noted, another 45 million people could be at risk of acute hunger due to rising food, energy and transport prices. In this case, the total number of people suffering from hunger would exceed the current record of 319 million .

According to him, the world is already in a state of “perfect storm”, where the scale of the food crisis is unprecedented.

Important! Additional pressure is being created by rising logistics costs — they have increased by 18% since the attacks began, forcing the redirection of some humanitarian cargo. The situation is also complicated by reduced funding for WFP, as donor countries increasingly direct resources to defense needs.
