Ukraine has recorded a decline in wholesale prices for greenhouse cucumbers amid an increase in supply. Favorable weather accelerated the ripening of products, which forced producers to reconsider their pricing policy.
Why are greenhouse cucumbers getting cheaper?
Last week, prices for greenhouse cucumbers began to decline on the Ukrainian market, EastFruit reports. The main reason was warm and sunny weather, which significantly accelerated the ripening of vegetables in greenhouses.
Farm harvests have increased dramatically, leading to an increase in supply. Under these conditions, producers are forced to gradually lower their selling prices in order to sell their products.
As of the end of the week, greenhouse plants were selling cucumbers for between 125–165 hryvnias per kilogram, which is on average 10% cheaper than the week before.
Demand is falling, imports are putting pressure on the market
An additional factor in the price decline was the weakening of demand. Despite the decline in prices, greenhouse vegetables remain relatively expensive for consumers, which is holding back sales.
At the same time, there is a stable presence of imported products on the market, which cost less — usually up to 100 hryvnias per kilogram. This also intensifies competition and puts pressure on the prices of Ukrainian producers.
Despite the current decline, cucumbers in Ukraine are still sold at approximately 25% more expensive than during the same period last year, indicating an overall high price level in the segment.
Currently, according to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for cucumbers have been set in Ukrainian supermarkets:
- Auchan 169 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Metro 165.36 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Megamarket 213 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Silpo 179 hryvnias per kilogram;
- ATB 169.89 hryvnia per kilogram.
