Potato prices in Ukraine continue to fall due to weak demand and increasing supply. Farmers are forced to actively sell off their stocks amid deteriorating product quality.
Why are potato prices falling again?
This week, a new decline in potato prices was recorded on the Ukrainian market, according to analysts from the EastFruit project.
According to them, the key factor behind the price drop is low trading activity, while supply volumes have increased significantly. With the onset of warmer weather, farms have begun to actively sell off products from storage.
Currently, producers are offering potatoes at a price of 5–11 hryvnias per kilogram ($0.11–0.25 per kilogram), which is on average 15% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.
Please note! Market participants note that additional pressure on prices is being created by a large number of substandard products. This primarily concerns potatoes from unequipped storage facilities, the quality of which is rapidly deteriorating due to warm weather.
Compared to the same period last year, potatoes in Ukraine are now 62% cheaper on average. Currently, according to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for potatoes have been set in large supermarket chains:
- Auchan 15.90 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Megamarket 22.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
- ATB 10.80 hryvnia per kilogram;
- Silpo 20 hryvnias per kilogram.
