The strawberry season has started in Transcarpathia – the first local berries have already appeared on the markets. Producers explain the high price of early products by significant cultivation costs and limited supply.

Farmers speed up the season thanks to technology

In the Transcarpathian region, farmers have already started selling strawberries of the new season, reports “News of Zakarpattia”. The berries appeared earliest in the Vynohradiv and Beregov regions, where farmers actively use combined growing technologies.

This involves using greenhouses with additional shelter with agrofibre. This approach allows you to harvest two to three weeks earlier than in open ground.

Producers emphasize that local strawberries have a more pronounced aroma and taste compared to imported products that arrived on supermarket shelves in the winter.

High price due to costs and limited supply

Currently, the first Transcarpathian strawberries are sold for approximately 300 hryvnias per kilogram. The main reason for this price level is high production costs.

In particular, a significant share of costs is spent on heating greenhouses and protecting plants from spring frosts, which requires additional resources and materials. At the same time, supply volumes remain small, which also supports high prices.

Farmers expect more local berries to appear on the market by early May, which could help gradually lower the cost of strawberries for consumers.

What are the current prices for strawberries?

As of April 2026, prices for fresh strawberries in Ukraine are high, according to the Ministry of Finance, the average cost is approximately 460.65 hryvnia per kilogram.

In supermarkets such as Novus or Silpo, berries are offered at prices ranging from 229 to over 270 hryvnias for 100–500 grams, and at the Shuvar wholesale market, prices start at 258 hryvnias per kilogram.

Last year's cabbage is getting more expensive again: what's happening with market prices?

  • Prices for last year's white cabbage in Ukraine increased by 25% due to reduced supply and increased demand.

  • Despite the price increase, current cabbage prices are significantly lower than last year's, on average by 85%, due to a surplus of production in previous periods.
