Ukraine's trade volumes with the EU have fallen significantly
In 2025, the foreign trade turnover of agricultural and food products between Ukraine and the countries of the European Union amounted to 15.7 billion US dollars, which is 9% less than the record 17.2 billion US dollars in 2024. This was reported by the Deputy Director of the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics”, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine Mykola Pugachev.
The decrease in the indicator is explained by the reduction in exports of Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU countries, which also affected the trade balance. It remained positive, but decreased to 5.9 billion US dollars.
Ukraine's main trading partners among the European Union countries last year were Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, France, Romania, and Belgium. These countries accounted for about 80% of the total agri-food trade between Ukraine and the EU.
Imports from the European Union increased
At the same time, imports of agricultural products from the European Union increased. In 2025, Ukraine purchased such goods worth about 4.914 billion US dollars, which is almost 15% more than the year before.
The largest amount of money was spent on the import of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – 514 million USD. Food products, extracts and concentrates were purchased for 429 million USD, animal feed and by-products – 397 million USD, cocoa and chocolate products – 394 million USD, and tobacco products – 384 million USD.
Dairy products accounted for a significant share of imports – 6.6% of the total. Their imports increased by 17% and reached 324 million USD, of which 270 million USD was for various types of cheese.
In addition, supplies of finished grain products to the Ukrainian market amounted to 304 million US dollars. In total, these product groups formed 56% of the value of food imports from the European Union.
Interesting! According to the forecasts of scientists at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, in 2026, EU countries will continue to maintain leading positions in the structure of food imports to Ukraine.
