Russian agent preparing attacks on Kharkiv energy infrastructure detained

According to the SBU, during the investigation it was discovered that the agent came to the attention of Russian special services through an acquaintance living in Russia, as reported by Ukrinform.

After remote recruitment, he received a task from his handler: to blow up an important electrical substation that supplies electricity to one of the districts of Kharkov.

The suspect received detailed instructions from his Russian handler on how to assemble an improvised explosive device (IED) at home.

He was detained by law enforcement officers while he was in the process of making an explosive device at his home.

The SBU also found out that the man kept records of the movements of Ukrainian security forces while attending children’s events. This was considered a test assignment from the curator to assess his readiness for more complex tasks.

According to the case materials, if the first substation was successfully disabled, the agent was supposed to carry out similar attacks on other energy facilities in the city.

During searches of his home and car, law enforcement officers found components of an IED, pro-Kremlin paraphernalia, including a Ukrainian passport in a cover with a Russian flag, as well as a tablet and a phone with evidence of communication with the enemy.

He was officially charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
