Ukrainian military entrenched in Russia's Belgorod region — NATO general

Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue active combat operations on the territory of the Russian Federation — in particular, they have established themselves in defensive positions in the Belgorod region.

This was officially stated by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Christopher Cavoli, during hearings in the relevant US Senate committee. According to him, Ukrainian forces not only hold positions in the Kursk region, but also have established themselves in the Belgorod region, creating a defensive line there.

General Cavoli explained that since August 2024, Ukrainian forces have been conducting operations in the north of Slobozhanshchyna, in the border regions of the Russian Federation. They control part of the Kursk region, despite the enemy's attempts to push them out of there (the deadline was set for the end of September last year).

The Russian army, even with the support of units from North Korea, was unable to achieve this goal. Instead, Ukrainian units managed not only to hold part of the Kursk region, but also to occupy strategically advantageous positions in the Belgorod region.

Christopher Cavoli also noted that the situation in the Belgorod region remains dynamic – Ukrainian forces continue to counter-offensive operations, while maintaining advantageous defensive positions south of the city of Belgorod. The general described this area as “very well defensible”, which allows Ukrainian units to control the situation in the region and complicate the actions of Russian troops.

“They're holding a very good defensive area south of Belgorod. A few weeks ago, the Ukrainians launched a small counteroffensive against Russia. So we still have movement back and forth in that area,” he noted.

Western analysts monitoring the fighting in the Belgorod region have already confirmed the advance of Ukrainian units several kilometers deep into Russian territory. Public reports from US and UK think tanks speak of the creation of bridgeheads for further actions and possible changes in the frontline geography.

It should also be noted that the successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the border regions of the Russian Federation may change the tactical situation in eastern Ukraine. Control over parts of the Kursk and Belgorod regions complicates the logistics of Russian troops and reduces the possibilities for massive strikes on the territory of Ukraine.

At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities do not officially comment on the details of operations on the territory of the aggressor state, adhering to a regime of information silence for security reasons.

We will remind you that there was already information about the activity of Ukrainian forces in the Belgorod region earlier. However, this is the first time that a high-ranking NATO representative has officially stated this. This fact confirms the change in the nature of the fighting — from purely defensive to flexible maneuver operations in depth.
