Ukraine is planning to open pharmacies in hospitals with the lowest prices for medicines

State pharmacies may appear in hospitals in Ukraine. This will help make medicines more accessible and cheaper for patients. The Ministry of Health is already working on this issue together with local authorities.

Why is this beneficial for patients?

Today, there are over 900 pharmacies operating in hospitals, but most of them are private. The new state-owned pharmacies will have the following advantages:

  • Medicines will be cheaper because pharmacies will not pay for rent and utilities – the hospital covers this;
  • Pharmacies will be able to sell medicines with a minimum markup, as permitted by the government;
  • Patients in remote areas will have better access to necessary medicines.

What are the difficulties?

For such pharmacies to work properly, several important issues need to be addressed:

  • How to properly purchase and account for medicines;
  • How to separate free medicines purchased by the state from those sold in pharmacies;
  • How to ensure that hospitals do not lose their status as non-profit institutions.

The Ministry of Health, together with other government agencies, is working on these issues.
