“There is a chance to agree on other conditions”: the Ministry of Economy explained what the new US tariffs mean for Ukraine
The US is introducing new tariffs that will also affect Ukrainian exports. The rate for Ukrainian goods will be 10%. This is a general tariff that will also apply to many other countries. Compared to Moldova (31%) and the EU (20%), the conditions for Ukraine look acceptable. However, the question of revising these conditions remains open.
What goods does Ukraine export to the USA?
The Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko, explained that in 2024, Ukraine exported goods worth $874 million to the United States. The largest share in these exports was:
- Cast iron – $363 million;
- Pipes – $112 million;
- Other categories – a total of over 600 types of products.
In return, Ukraine imported goods worth $3.4 billion from the United States. At the same time, Ukrainian duties on American goods remain quite low: on cars – 10%, on oil and coal – 0%.
How will tariffs affect Ukrainian business?
The introduction of a 10% duty will hit small manufacturers exporting their products to the US the hardest. However, according to Svyrydenko, the situation is not critical, and the Ukrainian side is already working to achieve better conditions for domestic exporters.
It is worth noting that the American side leaves the possibility of revising the tariffs, and Ukraine will continue negotiations on fair trade conditions. Kyiv has something to offer the United States, as the Ukrainian market provides a wide range of goods, and the strategic partnership between the countries is important for both sides.
What's next?
The Ukrainian government is currently negotiating changes to the terms of Ukrainian exports. The final decision on tariffs has not yet been made, and there is a possibility that they will be revised. In any case, Ukraine will continue to work on strengthening its economic partnership with the United States, which will minimize possible negative consequences.
