Today, March 3, Great Lent begins. It is the longest and most strict for believers. We are talking about the most important dates and traditions of the Easter Lent.
How long will Easter Lent last in 2025?
Great Lent will last 48 days – until April 19 inclusive. Therefore, the bright Resurrection of Christ for Orthodox Christians and Greek Catholics, who celebrate according to the new Julian calendar, falls on April 20.
Lent Periods
The fasting period can be conventionally divided into two parts – the first 40 days, also called Lent, and the next 7 days – Holy Week. During this period, people not only limit their consumption of meat, milk, and eggs, but also spend time in prayer.
With the permission of the priest, relaxation of the fast is permitted for pregnant women, the sick, children, and the elderly.
A time of spiritual purification and preparation for Easter
This is the longest fast of the year, lasting 48 days. During this period, Orthodox Christians pray, abstain from certain foods, and focus especially on repentance.
Important dates during Easter Lent
Clean Monday (March 3) is the first day of Lent, when it is customary to clean one's home, pray, and ask for forgiveness for sins.
Holy Week and Good Friday (April 13-19, Good Friday – April 18) is a period of mourning for the suffering of Jesus Christ. During this time, one cannot work, organize feasts, or engage in household chores.
Lazarus Saturday (April 12) is the eve of Palm Sunday, when believers pray for the health of their loved ones and prepare willow branches for consecration.
Palm Sunday (April 13) is a holiday that symbolizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. On this day, it is customary to bless a willow tree in church and avoid hard work.
