Explosion at Yunist market in Desnyanskyi district of Kyiv: there are casualties

This morning, the Desnyanskyi police department received a report of an explosion in one of the shops in the market. An investigative and operational group, explosives technicians and medics immediately arrived at the scene. As a result of the incident, two men, local residents aged 59 and 60, died.

Cause of the explosion and investigation

According to preliminary conclusions of experts, the explosion occurred due to the detonation of a grenade. Explosives technicians found remnants of ammunition at the scene, which confirms this version. Currently, law enforcement officers continue to establish all the details of the incident.

In connection with the incident, the police opened two criminal proceedings:

• under Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – intentional murder;
• under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives.

What is known about the deceased?

The deceased men were local residents. Investigations are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the explosion. Police are interviewing witnesses and analyzing CCTV footage.
