Carrot shortage on the market – why prices rose by more than 30 percent in a week

Main points

  • On the Ukrainian market, the price of carrots increased by 34% due to active demand and seasonal reduction in stocks of quality products.
  • Despite the price increase, carrot prices in Ukraine remain 56% lower than a year ago.

The Ukrainian vegetable market has recorded a new jump in prices for last year's carrots. The reason was a combination of active demand and a seasonal reduction in stocks of quality products on farms.

Demand for carrots has picked up sharply

In Ukraine, the price of last year's carrots continued to rise this week, EastFruit reports. As market analysts note, trading activity in the segment has noticeably increased, which quickly affected the price situation.

The main buyers remain wholesale companies and retail chains, which are more actively forming purchases. Against the background of such demand, farmers have had the opportunity to revise prices upwards.

An additional factor was the seasonal reduction in vegetable stocks on farms, which is making quality produce increasingly less available.

Last year's stocks are almost exhausted

As of now, producers are selling carrots from the 2025 harvest for 13–20 hryvnias per kilogram. On average, this is 34% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.

Market participants explain this dynamics precisely by the lack of quality root vegetables. In many farms, the remaining carrots have already practically run out, which creates a deficit on the domestic market.

Under such conditions, sellers are in no hurry to increase supply, but on the contrary, they use the favorable situation to increase selling prices.

Despite the price increase, carrots are cheaper than last year

Despite the current price spike, carrots in Ukraine are still significantly cheaper than a year ago. The average price level is currently about 56% lower than in the same period last year.

Market experts predict that the positive price trend may continue. However, due to the gradual saturation of demand and limited remaining products, the pace of price increases will probably not be so rapid.

Thus, the carrot market will likely remain tight in the coming weeks, and the shortage of quality produce will continue to support prices.

What are the prices of carrots in stores?

According to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for carrots have now been set in supermarkets of large Ukrainian chains:

  • Metro 37.90 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Auchan 34.90 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Megamarket 45 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • ATB 37.89 hryvnia per kilogram;
  • Silpo 42.30 hryvnias per kilogram.

Onion prices have gone up again: what's happening on the market?

The situation is similar with the prices of last year's onions. They have risen noticeably in price over the past week.

  • Onion prices in Ukraine have increased due to a reduction in vegetable stocks for the 2025 harvest and increased trade.

  • Despite the price increase, current prices remain approximately 68% lower than in mid-May 2025, and the quality of vegetables in storage is deteriorating.

Due to the deterioration in quality, buyers are increasingly expressing dissatisfaction with the products, which is deterring sellers from more drastic price revisions.
