Discus throw world record holder suffers torn pectoral muscle and undergoes surgery

Lithuanian discus thrower Mikolas Alekna suffered a torn pectoral muscle and underwent surgery. The athlete announced this on his social media page.

The 23-year-old track and field athlete suffered an injury while training in the U.S. He was then taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery less than a week after the injury.

Alekna is currently undergoing a recovery process. The athlete and his team have not yet commented on the time frame he will miss before returning to international competition.

The Lithuanian thrower last competed at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, where he won the silver medal with a throw of 67.84 m. After that, the athlete did not participate in any competitions, both at the international and national levels.

The previous season was a breakthrough for Alekna: he broke the world record twice. With a result of 75.56 m, set at the competition in Oklahoma, he became the first athlete in history to throw the discus over 75 meters.
