Polish tennis player Iga Swiontek announced the end of her work with Belgian specialist Wim Fissett. The decision was made after the athlete's sensational exit in the opening match of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami. The tennis player announced this on her Instagram.
Despite being ranked in the top three in the world, Swiatek failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals of any major tournament in 2026. This was a contrast to the previous year, when the Pole won her first Wimbledon title under Fissett's guidance.
The turning point was her performance at the prestigious tournament in Miami. Świętok ended her fight in the second round: in the Polish derby, she lost to the 50th racket of the world Magda Linett with a score of 6:1, 5:7, 3:6. This defeat interrupted Świętok's record streak of 73 consecutive victories in the first rounds of WTA tournaments.
After completing her performances in Florida, the 24-year-old tennis player officially confirmed the personnel changes in her team. Swiontek thanked the coach, who joined her staff in October 2024, for working together and realizing her sporting goals.
“After many months of working together with my coach Wim Fissett, I have decided to take a different path. It has been a busy period, full of challenges and many important experiences. I am grateful to him for his support, experience and everything we have achieved together – including one of my biggest sporting dreams,” the tennis player said in her Instagram post.
Commenting on her last performance on the court, Swiontek admitted that the result in Miami was a serious challenge for her and forced her to reconsider her future plans.
“Miami was a difficult test for me. Of course, I feel disappointment, bitterness and responsibility for my performance on the court. I also learned a lot of important lessons, and I think that's natural for a person… I know there are a lot of questions, but I will let you know what happens next, in due time. Right now I'm using this moment to take care of myself and prepare for the new chapter,” added Swiontek.
Wim Fissett is known for his work with the world's top players, including Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka and Naomi Osaka. In his alliance with Swiatek, the main achievement was the victory at Wimbledon 2025: the Polish tennis player defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0 twice to win the title.
