
Portuguese long jumper Agathe De Sousa won her debut World Indoor Championships medal with gold in Torun.
De Sousa entered the 2026 World Indoor Championships as the current season's record holder, thanks to a jump of 6.97 meters in early February. She also remained undefeated in the long jump since the beginning of the year, having won three consecutive gold medals.

At the World Championships, the season leader won thanks to her fifth attempt, in which she flew 6.92 meters. In the last jump, the reigning European indoor champion Larissa Yapikino came close to the Portuguese – 6.87 m.
The podium was completed by Colombian Natalia Linares, whose best result was a second jump of 6.80 meters – after two rounds, she was the leader in the tournament.

“I didn't think about my rivals, I was competing only with myself and no one else,” De Sousa said in a comment to the organizers. “I came here to jump seven meters – that was all I had in mind. This time it didn't work out, but I know that everything is ahead. I have a gold medal, so I'm sure it will change my life positively.”
Winning the world indoor championship is the biggest achievement of De Sousa's career. At major international tournaments, she has only won the bronze medal at Euro 2024.
6.92 meters was the third best result in Agata's career. The jumper has once cleared seven meters (7.03 m with a national record in 2023), and this is the second time since the beginning of the year that she has cleared 6.90 m.
Agathe De Sousa: what is known about the jumper
- Finalist at the 2025 World Championships, where she took sixth place with a jump of 6.67 meters.
- At the European Championships level, she won her debut medal in 2024 – “bronze” with a result of 6.91 m.
- In 2024, she also made her debut at the Olympic Games, but in Paris she stopped at the qualifying stage – 24th place (6.34 m).
- Since the beginning of the 2026 season, she has collected four consecutive victories in the long jump, including winning the stage of the Golden Athletics Tour in Madrid with the current world season record of 6.97 m.
