The EU has proposed using the “grain deal” mechanism to unblock shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This could be a response to the threat to global energy, food, and fertilizer markets.

The “Grain Agreement” can be an example

European Union foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas has suggested using the “grain deal” mechanism as a possible model for restoring shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports. The idea emerged amid escalating tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel.

She said the EU was looking for diplomatic ways to keep key trade routes open. Restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz are already affecting global markets for energy, food and fertilizers.

Kallas recalled that a similar mechanism had previously been successfully used during the war in Ukraine. This was the “grain agreement” concluded with the mediation of the United Nations, which allowed the resumption of agricultural exports through the Black Sea.

Please note! According to the diplomat, this initiative has already been discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The organization is currently working on possible options for implementing such an approach in the new conditions.
