
Barcelona defeated Newcastle in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 – 7:2 at home.
After the first match in England, the teams remained evenly matched – the match ended in a 1:1 draw, and the Catalans had to take the lead with a penalty kick in the sixth minute of injury time.
In contrast, Barcelona scored seven goals in the home match. The score was opened in the sixth minute, when Rafinha scored.
By the 28th minute, Newcastle had twice managed to equalize the score thanks to a brace from Anthony Elanga – 2:2. However, before half-time, a penalty from Lamine Yamal put Barcelona ahead for the third time.
In the second half, Barcelona crushed their opponents, scoring four clean sheets. Robert Lewandowski scored twice, while Rafinha and Fermin Lopez added one more goal each.

“A crazy game,” Marca quotes Barcelona coach Hansi Flick as saying. “We weren't very sharp in the first half. In the second half, we got better, had the ball and kept control. The third goal allowed us to get back into the game.”
What does the match result mean?
- It was only the third time in the club's history that Barcelona had scored seven goals in a Champions League match, having previously done so in 2012 (7-1 against Bayer Leverkusen) and 2016 (7-0 against Celtic).
- Newcastle became the second English club to concede seven goals in the Champions League, the previous record held by Tottenham (2-7 to Bayern Munich in 2019/20).
- Barcelona are unbeaten in 16 consecutive home matches in all competitions, winning all 16 matches, scoring a total of 57 goals (conceding 12).
Barcelona will play in the Champions League quarter-finals for the third time in a row. The Blaugranas will face the winner of the tie between Atletico and Tottenham (first leg — 5:2).
