Organic farming in Sumy region has faced a sharp increase in costs due to frosts and blackouts. Despite this, farmers are trying not to increase prices for consumers and are looking for ways to save.
Greenhouse farms suffered losses from frost and blackouts
In the village of Klyshky, the organic farm “Svitovoch” is operating under conditions of significant increase in costs, reports “TRK Accent”. The reasons were abnormal frosts this winter and regular power outages.
The cost of greenhouse vegetables has increased by one and a half times. Due to blackouts, workers have to manually control the temperature around the clock to preserve seedlings. The founder of the farm, Andriy Marchenko, notes that despite the increase in production prices, they are trying to keep prices for consumers at the same level as last year. To reduce costs, the company installed solar panels and a self-made heat pump.
Currently, the second crop of cucumbers is being harvested in greenhouses with an area of about 1,500 square meters, and over 50 types of greens are also being grown.
To stabilize the financial situation, the farm has begun construction of its own processing plant. This will allow it to can its products in August and September, when vegetable prices are traditionally the lowest. The project is being implemented with grant funds, and it is also planned to create 2 new jobs.
Interesting! Farmers are already preparing tomato, pepper, and cabbage seedlings for planting. The farm supplies its products not only to the Sumy region, but also to approximately 200 permanent families throughout Ukraine, working under the direct sales model.
