Zelenskyy stated that specific security guarantees for Ukraine provide specific dates for the end of the war. The document on them is ready and, according to him, awaits signing and ratification by the US Congress.
Political scientist Artem Bronzhukov, in a conversation with Channel 24, expressed his belief that 100% security guarantees within major alliances almost do not exist. There are certain promises, situational things that are in the interests of both states.
What should Ukraine focus on?
No matter how many years the US Congress or another parliament ratifies a certain document, as the political scientist noted, if there is no political expediency in a period of crisis, no state will send its troops. According to him, regarding the security guarantee from the US, today there are many “gray” unclear areas, because the main part of the discussion is not public.
Assessing the moment we are in now, it is worth considering that politicians are trying to pass off wishful thinking as reality. As an example of Davos, we should mention the agreement that was supposed to be signed for 800 billion, but in fact nothing was received. The same applies to security guarantees, a rather vague issue at present,
– Bronzhukov said.
According to the political scientist, the most important thing in this discussion is for Ukraine to understand that security guarantees are great, that seeking alliances and partners is also good, that will help in the future, but the most important thing in this context is its own strong state with a powerful army. He emphasized that this is what we will need to work on the most.
Security guarantees in exchange for concessions
As for the Americans, the political scientist suggested that Zelensky probably has a pressure point on Trump, which is that ending the Russian-Ukrainian war is a political obligation for the US president. He took it upon himself during the election campaign.
In order for Ukraine to make concessions somewhere, the president can put pressure on the American counterpart and say that in this case the US should vote for security guarantees through its parliament. This would give confidence that this document has more value than the paper it is signed on,
– Bronzhukov said.
The political scientist concluded that Ukraine is doing the right thing by focusing on getting a clear security structure that will work after the war, not only for our country, but also for all of Europe. However, according to Bronzhukov, more attention should be focused on the need to increase aid volumes right now.
After all, Putin is not going to end the war and seeks to advance two main scenarios: the capitulation of political Ukraine, the continuation of hostilities to exhaustion. Therefore, it is important for Kyiv to direct all efforts to obtain as many resources as possible and force Putin to sit at the negotiating table with objective military steps.
Security guarantees: what statements are being made?
-
The President of Ukraine stated that the document on security guarantees for our state will be signed only after the end of hostilities. First, the leaders of the United States and Ukraine will sign it, then the United States Congress and the Verkhovna Rada will ratify it.

The United States has commented on information from Western media that the United States is allegedly willing to provide security guarantees to Ukraine if it cedes Donetsk region. The American side, represented by Deputy Spokesperson for the US Administration Anna Kelly, stated that the White House is not imposing anything on Ukraine regarding territorial issues. She emphasized that the only role of the United States in the peace process is to bring the parties closer together so that they conclude a peace agreement.
